Responsibilities
- Greet the patient by name and seat the patient on time
- Check medical history, inquire about dental problems
- Take X-rays as necessary
- Check the patient for decay, missing teeth, oral lesions, and oral cancer screen
- Check to see that all previously recommended treatment has been completed
- Verbally indicate to the patient any dental conditions existing that the doctor may want to address
- Perform root planing, and sub-gingival curettage as necessary
- Administer anesthetic as needed for his/her patients or the doctors
- Keep accurate and detailed notes
- Set up the patient's six-month recall appointment
- Set up trays
- Sterilize instruments and trays
- Keep your area adequately stocked with supplies
- Chart existing oral condition and tx plan accurately
- Assist the doctor or other team members as time and schedule dictate.
- Educate patients about daily home care
- Focus conversations with patients on the patient or on dentistry
- Take or update dental and medical health history
- Perform prophylaxis, scaling, and polishing
- Utilize laser as needed in Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy or Laser Bacterial Reduction
- Complete intra oral wellness/digital scans
- Promote preventive periodontal procedures
- Administer fluoride treatment
- Oversee recall system control: 80-90% recall
- Oversee hygiene inventory control (hygiene supplies, X-ray supplies, home care aids)
- Use gloves, mask, and protective eyewear with every patient
- Maintain sterilization procedures for room after each patient
- Maintain hygiene equipment
- Maintain membership and attend dental hygiene association meetings
- Assist with practice marketing (school and community outreach presentations, etc.)
- Contribute to team spirit
- Contribute to and attend daily morning meetings and team meetings
- Attend continuing education courses annually
- Encourage patient referrals
- Take blood pressure on patients.
- Perio probe and chart existing or change in pocket depth.
- Recommend perio consultation; refer when necessary.
- Explain prevention to patients and parents of small children.
- Reflect the doctor's philosophy in her practice.
- Be aware of patient's treatment plan and need for complete dentistry.
- Counsel patients on dental treatment previously recommended.
- Complete whitening and sealants as needed.
