POSITION SUMMARY: 
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the entire accounting department, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance. This individual will ensure the financial health and accuracy of Independent Waste by establishing and maintaining robust accounting policies, processes, and systems. The Controller will collaborate closely with leadership and department heads to provide actionable financial insights, ensure compliance with financial regulations, and support the company’s strategic goals. This role requires a leader who is not only highly skilled but also hands-on and willing to tackle challenges directly.


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
All Controllers are expected to maintain strong financial oversight and ensure compliance with all relevant standards. More specific examples of duties are provided below.

- Accounting and Financial OversightManage the preparation and accuracy of financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company standards.
- Oversee all functions of the accounting department, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll processing. 
- Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and reporting.
- Budgeting and ForecastingDevelop and manage the company’s annual budget in collaboration with the executive team.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial forecasts to support business planning and decision-making.
- Compliance and ControlsEnsure compliance with all financial, legal, and tax regulations.
- Maintain and refine internal controls to protect company assets and minimize risk.
- Oversee annual audits and manage relationships with external auditors and tax advisors.
- Strategic Financial Leadership:Provide actionable insights and recommendations to leadership based on financial data and key performance indicators.
- Collaborate with department heads to align financial goals with operational objectives.
- Play a key role in strategic initiatives such as acquisitions, expansions, and system upgrades.
- Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and manage accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, efficiency, and professional development.
- Lead and mentor the team to ensure continuous improvement and adherence to best practices.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Required).
CPA certification (Preferred).Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting or finance experience, including leadership roles (Required).
Proven knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and compliance standards.
Advanced proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and Microsoft Excel.
