Exciting New Opportunity for

Entry-Level Sports Journalists at ESPN SoCal

Overview

Breaking into sports media can be hard. Breaking into sports media in a major market can be almost impossible. That’s why ESPN SoCal (Los Angeles) has created a groundbreaking new program to allow a select number of budding sports journalists to do what they love while getting the hands-on experience they need. We are looking for passionate storytellers who can use the mediums of audio, video and print to create and amplify content fans will love, all while being associated with the number one brand in sports media.

Position Title

Assistant Producer and Sports Correspondent, ESPN SoCal

Position Description

Each day at colleges and high schools large and small across America amazing athletes do outstanding things. Often, their accomplishments receive little or no attention. We want to change that by launching a new daily show in the nation’s number two media market, Los Angeles, to highlight these athletes and tell their stories. Think of it as a Sports Center for the little guy. Each day you will surface stories and interview players and coaches to produce segments for this show. Segment lengths will vary, but will generally be between three and five minutes. The primary medium will be audio.

Position Compensation

Parents, grandparents, schools and others love it when their player or team is featured in a story – especially by a media outlet in a major market. Finished segments will be made available for purchase in a format that can be used to highlight the story on personal, team, school or other social media. Players will also often use the pieces for recruiting websites and sizzle reels. Compensation for this position is commission-based, with journalists earning 60% of the net revenue (gross revenue minus processing expenses) from each sale. This is a standard employment W-2 position (not freelance) and payroll is processed on a weekly basis. Health insurance benefits are available. Estimated first-year compensation is between $31,200 and $60,000, depending upon performance.
