Salary Range:  $77000 - $95000 year

Our client, Kennedy Children’s Center, is seeking a Special Education Teacher for their Bronx location (100% on-site, not remote). Kennedy Children's Center provides high quality education services to young children with developmental delays, in partnership with families and communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Conduct initial assessments and ongoing evaluations to identify a child's strengths, weaknesses, and specific educational needs.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists, to gather assessment data.

Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):

  • Develop and implement IEPs for each child, outlining specific goals, objectives, and strategies for their educational progress.
  • Ensure that IEPs are tailored to the unique needs of each child, taking into account their disabilities, strengths, and family preferences.

Instructional Planning:

  • Create and adapt instructional materials and activities that are developmentally appropriate and accessible to children with disabilities.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of each child, including those with speech and language impairments, motor skill challenges, or behavioral difficulties.

Classroom Management:

  • Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment that supports the social and emotional development of young children.
  • Implement behavior management techniques and strategies to address challenging behaviors and promote positive social interactions.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with parents, guardians, and other members of the child's support team to ensure consistent and coordinated care.
  • Regularly communicate progress and challenges to parents and provide guidance on strategies for supporting the child at home.

Adaptive Technology and Assistive Devices:

  • Utilize technology and assistive devices to enhance learning opportunities for children with disabilities.
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in adaptive technology and incorporate them into the curriculum as needed.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with best practices in special education.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and seminars to enhance skills and knowledge.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of each child's progress, including assessment results, IEPs, and communication with parents and specialists.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal requirements and reporting deadlines.

Advocacy and Support:

  • Advocate for the rights and inclusion of children with disabilities within the educational system.
  • Offer emotional and academic support to children and their families, guiding them through the challenges of the special education process.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • State teaching certification or licensure in Special Education.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development and instructional strategies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with children, parents, and other professionals.
  • Patience, empathy, and adaptability to meet the diverse needs of young children with disabilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
