Opportunity Overview

GLHN Architects & Engineers has an opening for a Senior Civil Designer. This is a mid-level production based role working directly under the Civil Engineering Department Manager. The ideal candidate should possess extensive industry experience as a designer, OR is a recent graduate in the field of Civil Engineering with proficient Civil Software skills. Proficient knowledge and skill in the planning and designing civil engineering projects specifically in the areas of Water; Sewer; Sanitary Sewer; Wastewater; Processed Water; Reclaimed Water; and Fire Water is strongly desired.


Core Responsibilities

 The following assignments are typical but are not all-encompassing.  Every team member is expected to provide equal value by participating in the duties required to deliver a quality product on schedule. 

  • Assess requirements of a design, break the design into tasks, and work with the Project Manager or Engineer to determine scope, staffing and schedule need,        and ensures drawings and designs are in accordance with company and agency production and design standards.
  • Responsible for adherence to project schedules and timely completion of smaller, less complex projects.
  • Prepares design computations and quantity estimates.
  • Research code and agency issues and coordination with code/agency officials in resolving questions/issues.
  • Develops probable construction cost opinions for projects within the department.
  • Responsible for control of work-in-process.
  • Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, test, and aerial photographs to plan and design project.
  • Contributes to the research of design options.
  • Directs and supervises the activities of CAD (Autodesk) technicians and junior designers.
  • Organize and maintain project files.
  • May prepare or modify portions of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies and designs for the project.
  • Instructs CAD (Autodesk) technicians and junior designers how to reduce designs to working drawings.
  • Conducts visits to the project site to gather design information, monitor projects, and other duties as assigned.
  • Reviews shop drawing and contractor submittals.

What we need to see, 

  • 8-10 years’ previous civil design experience OR BS in Civil Engineering OR a combination of relevant experience and a Technical or Associate Degree from an          accredited technical institution in applicable engineering design areas.
  • Proficient working knowledge of discipline-specific modeling software Autodesk Civil 3D, WaterCAD, Flowmaster & (Navisworks – preferred)
  • Proficient in the use of MS products.
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision while adhering to project deadlines

What we LOVE to see,

  • A deep understanding of the utility systems, and model and design of those systems
  • Knowledge of Water Wells
  • Knowledge of local utility codes
  • Experience in Construction with an understanding of the field testing and methods
  • Understanding of the difference in other disciplines and the ability to read Revit designs to understand points of connection

Relationship Expectations  

  • Reports directly to Civil Engineering Department Manager
  • Works closely with a variety of staff across all disciplines to ensure project success,
          junior staff development, and business growth 
  • TRAVEL: In State: 30% Out of State: 15%
