Opportunity Overview

NOTE: Applicants that move forward to the interview process will be required to submit a portfolio of their work at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled interview date & should be prepared to present the material during the interview. 

As a project leader the Architectural Job Captain works on various projects as assigned by Supervisors. They will report to the Project Manager, Project Architect and/or Project Designer responsible for each project, and to the Directors of Design and/or Architecture relative to general duties and overall job performance. They may oversee the entire design process or assist in a specialized design/technical role. The Architectural Job Captain may work on several concurrent projects at a time. 

The Architectural Job Captain must be experienced in all areas of architectural practices. This position is intended for an experienced architectural staff person, who has not attained professional status. 

 

Core Responsibilities

 The following assignments are typical but are not all-encompassing. Every team member is expected to provide equal value by participating in the duties required to deliver a quality product on schedule. 

  • Assess the requirements of a project, break a project into tasks, and work with the Project Manager, Project Architect and/or Project Designer to determine scope of work, budget, and staffing.
  • Determine scope of work for architectural design based on preliminary review and meetings with the client.
  • Be knowledgeable of applicable building and zoning codes. Work with code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception is required.
  • Assign, evaluate and review work of project design team. Check progress of work and report as needed to the Project Manager, Project Architect and/or Project Designer.
  • Coordinate all aspects of project design and document completion within company and externally with clients and other design professionals. Possess proficient written and oral communications skills.
  • Prepare or review project construction estimates.
  • Perform all construction administration activities on assigned projects. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the construction process.
  • Promote use of and participate in development of company design and production standards.
  • Assist in the education and development of staff and act as resource for design and technical questions.
  • Maintain neat and organized work area allowing efficient access to project information required by other team members.
  • Interpret sketches, drawings, codes, building program and other similar material.
  • Utilize AutoCAD/Revit, SketchUp and other Design and BIM Programs in development of Architectural Communication Documents of buildings and their components.
  • Provide early phase design visualization support.
  • Assist in the preparation of documentation in various architectural phases including site plans, floor plans, building elevations, sections, and details.
  • Assist in the coordination of building systems (structural, mechanical, electrical, etc.) and associated documentation including clash detection within the BIM model.
  • Communicate and work effectively with other members of the production team.
  • Engaged in Marketing and Business Development activities such as technical writing for proposals, and white-papers, and/or participation in professional organizations.
  • Alignment of the Architectural Revit Template, under the guidance of the BIM Manager, to company and industry standards as well as applying best practices in areas of specialized knowledge and interest (ex. Universal Design, Sustainable Design, etc.). 
  • Assists in Project coordination of project meetings, schedule, and communications both internally and externally. 
  • Mentoring, training, and teaching of interns and junior staff.

Limits of Authority:

An Architectural Job Captain III may be expected to individually lead or run a project.  All work performed by an Architectural Job Captain III shall be executed under supervision of a Project Manager, Project Architect, Project Designer and/or Director of Design and/or Architecture. When serving as a project leader responsibility includes meeting schedule, budget, and quality requirements. May not change scope of work without approval of Project Manager.

What we need to see

Knowledge and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Architectural Technology. (A true Architect Ninja) 
  • 8 plus years previous architectural experience.  
  • Accomplished understanding of accessibility, city zoning practices and building codes.
  • Willing to work with others. 
  • Pursuit or acquired of Specialty Certifications and knowledge in areas such as LEED, WELL, Green Globes, Cx, CPABE, etc. 
  • Ongoing pursuit of Professional Development. (Your growth is our growth) 
  • Desire to take initiative, work independently and be able to perform unsupervised.
  • Expert in how to assemble a complete set of architectural construction documents.
  • Accomplished in use of Revit, Sketch Up, Form It, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D Studio Max, Rhino.
  • Ability to hand sketch and communicate concepts and ideas to others effectively.
  • Experienced in technics to communicate Design Intent. 
  • Technically Accomplished with the ability to communicate concepts and ideas to others effectively through well-conceived and coordinated drawings and materials.
  • Design-focused, team player, flexible, responsible, organized, rigorous thinker, committed to high quality, personable with strong communication skills. Open minded and curious.
  • Working knowledge of construction delivery methods is preferred.
  • Experienced understanding of the Construction Administration Process.
  • Encouraged to participate in technical and professional societies.
  • Keep current on the "state of the art" in the architectural practice through review of periodicals and continuing education.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and project scheduling software. 

 

 Relationship Expectations 

Works with various Project Manager, Project Architect and/or Project Designer, according to assignments. Will often serve as contact with client, other design professionals and contractors. When in role of project leader, will coordinate and schedule work of project team. May help in performance appraisal of project team members.
