About the Position!

The Ophthalmic Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring excellent patient care and supporting the efficient operation of the clinic. This position involves performing technician-specific eye exam duties to prepare patients for their examination by the doctor. You will need to understand and explain basic eye health topics to patients, administer topical medications, and assist with in-office surgical procedures and laser surgeries. Additionally, you will triage acute patient concerns over the phone, complete patient messages, and ensure thorough documentation. Successful candidates will excel in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Conduct preliminary eye exams to prepare patients for their appointment with the doctor.
  • Explain basic eye health topics and procedures to patients in an understandable manner.
  • Administer topical medications to patients as prescribed.
  • Set up, prepare, and assist with in-office surgical procedures and laser surgeries.
  • Triage acute patient concerns over the phone, providing guidance and scheduling urgent appointments as needed.
  • Complete patient messages and ensure all patient interactions are thoroughly documented in their medical records.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Preferred: minimum of 1 year experience as an ophthalmic or optometric technician or in a medical office setting.
  2. Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR).
  3. Preferred: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification.


Essential Skills and Abilities:

  1. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and healthcare team members.
  2. Current knowledge and use of medical terminology relevant to eye care.
  3. Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  4. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  5. Demonstrated computer literacy and the ability to efficiently use EMR and practice management software.

Clinical Equipment Skills:

  1. Proficiency in using equipment for photography and measurements of the eye, both externally and intraocularly.
  2. Understanding of basic maintenance procedures for ophthalmic equipment.
  3. Ability to report malfunctioning equipment to the clinical supervisor promptly.
  4. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms according to provided guidelines.
  5. Ensure exam rooms are well-stocked with necessary supplies.

Professional Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.
  2. Foster a mindset of continuous education and retain information from on-the-job training.
  3. Maintain professional conduct at all times and stay on task.
  4. Address patients and other staff members with a high level of professionalism and respect.
  5. Understand and comply with HIPAA standards to ensure patient confidentiality.
  6. Hold current CPR certification.
  7. Demonstrate willingness to obtain COA certification within 18 months of hire date.
