Job Description

The Cow Creek Band of The Umpqua Tribe of Indians is excited to offer a unique and vital role for an Engine Boss. Located in the heart of Oregon’s beautiful and rugged landscape, we are looking for a dedicated and experienced professional to lead our fire management team. This is a full-time position that plays a crucial role in managing and mitigating wildfire risks on tribal lands. As the Engine Boss, you will oversee a team and coordinate efforts to prevent, detect, and suppress wildfires effectively, ensuring the safety and preservation of our natural and cultural resources. Please note, this is not a remote job and requires physical presence at designated locations managed by the tribe.

Position Purpose

The Engine Boss oversees and leads a fire engine and attached personnel on wildfire prevention, mitigation, detection, and suppression projects. This position coordinates and/or performs the physical labor necessary to achieve Tribal goals and objectives related to wildfires.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in fuels mitigation, wildfire prevention, and wildfire suppression activities on Tribal and non-Tribal lands.
  • Supervises an engine crew and ensures that their assigned engine/crew is ready for initial attack responses as well as deployments to large fires.
  • Responds to wildfires that are on or threatening Tribal lands or interests.
  • Participates in fuels mitigation projects, including but not limited to defensible space projects, landscape scale mitigation projects, pre-planned strategic fuels breaks, and road brushing.
  • Assists with prescribed burning operations on Tribal lands. May assist other agencies with prescribed burning operations on non-Tribal lands.
  • May be deployed to wildfires and prescribed burning exchanges throughout the state/country when local fire conditions allow.
  • Operates department vehicles/equipment including but not limited to cars, trucks, forklifts, fire cache trailers, chippers, All Terrain Vehicles, and fire engines.
  • Requires work during various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years of age when employment begins and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualified as NWCG Firefighter Type 1 with a minimum of two seasons of wildland firefighting experience.
  • Hold or obtain within two years NWCG qualification as an Engine Boss, Single Resource (ENGB).
  • FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 certifications.
  • Possess a current Oregon driver’s license (Class “C” or higher) and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Pass the Work Capacity Test (Arduous) on an annual basis and have the ability to perform intense and/or sustained arduous physical activities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have administrative abilities to complete appropriate projects, reports, and paperwork.
  • Have the ability to be deployed to wildfire events across the state/country for 14 - 21 days at a time.

Desired Qualifications:

  • FEMA IS-300, IS-400 certifications.
  • Qualified as Type 4 Incident Commander (IC).
  • Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290).
  • Skills in wildland fire investigation.
  • Working knowledge of maps, compasses, and GPS.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and mentoring skills with the ability to direct a crew of diverse individuals.
  • Experience with ArcGIS and Collector software.
  • Oregon Class “B” CDL.
  • A Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Wildfire Science, Forestry, Natural Resources, or a similar field of study.
