Project Engineer

Minimum Qualifications:

This role will be filled by both registered Professional Engineers (PE, SE, ME, EE, CE), and by Engineers in Training (EIT).  It is expected that persons in the Project Engineer role will, as a minimum, be an Engineer in Training (EIT), having qualified for and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.  EIT’s must work under the direct supervision of the Discipline Lead.  If the discipline lead will be stamping completed drawing packages, then all such work by Project Engineers must be performed under the responsible charge of the stamping Discipline Lead.       

Role Overview:

As a Project Engineer you will be leading the development of your discipline’s construction documents. Your team will consist of either a Designer or Drafter. They will depend on your direction based on their current understanding of the discipline.  Project Engineers primarily handle the creations and development of construction documents. Having a deeper understanding of your discipline, you will be expected to take ownership of the content needed to complete your discipline’s design. 

Design

During design you will be taking ownership of developing the construction documents. You are expected to understand how to compose your design package, as well as developing your scope using calculations, specifications, and following the scope of work. This would mean directing your Designer or Drafter to assist in composing necessary views based on your scope. Your Discipline Lead will assist you and mentor you on items need to achieve a constructible package but the responsibility of fully developing the design package is reliant on your understanding of your discipline and design principles. In this position you will be completing the following:

  • Use of specifications
  • Develop scope specific details.
  • Annotate construction documents with scope enabling content and descriptions.
  • Determine the composition of your discipline package.
  • Apply discipline specific codes.
  • Develop calculations necessary for your scope to be reviewed by your discipline lead.
  • Apply work break-down structure (WBS) for estimating.
  • Coordinate with other designers to develop the overall scope.

      • Sheets
      • Models
  • QA/QC Drafter/ Designer deliverables.
  • Maintain meeting minutes for meetings in attendance.

The day-to-day responsibilities will require package progression updates, scope coordination, and task delegation with your Drafter/Designer. Your Drafter/Designer will depend on your progression with scope enabling calculations, spec assessment, and code assessment. As you are reaching a milestone it is critical you coordinate with your Discipline Lead for QA/QC on the package you are developing. As you are progressing through developing construction documents your coordination with other Project Engineers is needed to limit unforeseen changes in the design.

As design progresses you will participate and lead topics in: 

  • Client coordination meetings (i.e. workgroup meetings)
  • Internal coordination meetings
  • Discipline coordination meetings
  • Meeting minute notation
  • Design reviews

Construction Administration

During the construction phase of a project. Our completed package is given to a general contractor to onboard trade for construction. During this phase of a project, we will receive Request for Information (RFI) and Submittals (verification of items being purchased per spec). An incorrect RFI or submittal could exponentially affect a project and should be taken as seriously as design. 

 Your main responsibilities during this are to:

  • Review RFI’s
  • Review Submittals
  • Attend OAC Meetings
  • Attend Field walks.
  • Attending Design validation and site observation walks.
  • Verify you design package changes are being recorded for record sets.

SDC’s are handled in coordination with our construction administration team. They are there to help our teams focus on the important items and stay on track with pre-determined deliverable durations.
